Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We had our usual bountiful meal. My turkey was almost too pretty to eat . . . almost . . .

John offered to make dessert . . . carrot cake was my idea. Yum.

If you are wondering if that is a really big piece of carrot cake or a really small pink plate, the answer is yes to both. John warned me the frosting on the carrot cake might be too thick. Haha he is such a jokester! LOL Is that even possible? It is delicious.

Mom is in a good mood. She doesn't get up anymore. Her appetite is pretty good. She enjoys her meals. Sometimes she doesn't seem to know where she is. And sometimes she talks nonsense, but she comes out of it. Usually if she has a bad night's sleep we can expect some interesting old people stuff the next day. She asked Joe who his boss is. Sometimes she seems surprised to see me and comments that she didn't know I was staying here too. When she says stuff like that I suspect she thinks we are both in the nursing home! LOL  Sometimes I just say, Mom --- you aren't making sense, have a rest and I'll be back later. Whew, so far it has worked. It is sad to see Mom so weak and frail, but I gotta say, after chasing peppy Bernie around after the dementia and having to try to keep him from escaping and returning to his family in the United States, mom is pretty easy. Bernie was sneaky and quick, even in his 90s!

Best to all.

84

Jo Ann is 84 today. John has work stuff today, a fundraiser, so he came home yesterday for Mom's birthday celebration. Since John is off the animal products I decided to make a big pot of chili, which mom loves anyway, she loves all things soup and bean, and left some of it vegan and the carnivorous Mallaneys had some spicy sausage and a touch of beef broth stirred into theirs. I gotta say, with some toppers of corn chips, sharp cheddar, sour cream, green onions and cilantro, along with some corn muffins, it really hit the spot on a cool fall day. I made this no-bake cheesecake stuff Mom has made as long as I can remember, with pineapple and cream cheese and cool whip and a graham cracker crust. It was a good day. Mom will definitely want her favorite Aurelio's pizza for her birthday meal, but with John off the cheese we will have it another day.

Mom doesn't get up anymore, she is in bed all the time. She is holding steady. Her appetite is pretty good and she is in a good mood (usually). Sometimes though we all get tired and short.  Sometimes she can't hear. Or chooses not to . . . lol. Once in a while she is totally out of it, but I've noticed those periods usually follow a bad sleeping night. Like the other day she said "Well, I suppose I'll get out of here one of these days!?"  And then one night she said "I don't suppose a person can get a cup of coffee and a cookie around this place!?" I mean come on Jo Ann . . . we always have coffee and cookies! LOL  I asked her where she thinks she is, and told her she was at her house on Benton Street where she has lived for 50 years. She told me she doesn't remember Benton Street, she remembers Douglas Street (pre-children) and the farm. I said OK, and got her coffee and cookie.  The next day I asked her where she lived and she looked at me like I had two heads, and she knew the Benton Street address and informed me that she moved here in 1972. Then I think she mentioned to Joe that Kay is slipping. Sigh. It was pretty hilarious. She is still getting visits from the nurse and the bath aide, which is incredibly helpful and makes me feel better about things.

October seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. I think I say that every month.

It doesn't seem fair to me that as he ages John's hair is getting black and mine is getting a white as can be. Though I admittedly would look quite strange with black hair.

Aren't the prices of things crazy! Good lord. Groceries and gas and life! And the time change . . . I can't believe I forgot to change my clock at work on Friday. Kills me going in there on a Monday morning and turning it back an hour! Ok . . . done whining.

Pretty quiet around these parts. Quiet is GOOD! Hoping to finish up the fall yard work today, John helped with some stuff yesterday, so almost done.

Best to all.

Out Date

Well, Mom will be home on Thursday. She doesn't look too peppy to be honest, but there is no place like home. She is definitely ready to come home. It is nice that a new round of home health care will be available, that is sure a big help and a relief too. I actually saw her bad arm today, it is looking a lot better, a lot less swelling, whew. I happened to be there today when the aide brought her lunch and I asked her how Mom had been eating, and she said not very well. She also unwrapped mom's dessert for her (some sort of ice cream bar), and said that she always finishes that lol. Hopefully her appetite will pick up when she gets home. She looks very thin . . . at least for a Morris Mallaney. She is not one to eat a whole lot at once, just eats little bits often throughout the day, so 3 squares a day isn't really her style, she is missing all the in-between stuff she likes.  We will wait on her at home and I will make sure to have her favorites on hand.

Just like Mom's last trip to rehab, she is just out of quarantine in time to be discharged. Not that visiting through the 4 inch gap in the window isn't fun! I'm so classy, I just grab my cooler, it is the perfect height, I sit down and I'm right at window level. Unfortunately the cooler is empty when I go visit Mom.

Joe went to doc this week and had to go on cholesterol medicine. Interestingly enough, when he went to pick up his Rx he also picked up a pack of breakfast sausage too. I asked if the doctor had talked to him about any dietary changes and he said no, but today he came home from the store with oatmeal? LOL  I'll be going for blood work soon, won't be surprised if it happens to me too. Oh boy.

Finn went to the vet yesterday for an abscess, gosh it is nasty looking. $133.50. Yep.

I'd pull up the garden, but the pollinators and birds are really enjoying it. The hummingbirds are very interesting characters. I could have done without this latest hot spell too. I'm ready for fall.

I'm off the Braidwood Rec Club courtesy of my friends Mar and Geo for beers and a cookout. Have a good weekend all!

Back to Rehab

Well I got up to the hospital after work on Tuesday to visit Mom and she wasn't in her room. She was having a procedure. I assumed it was the elbow. I went to cafeteria and had some supper and went back up afterwards and she still wasn't back. I got to the car and my phone rang, and it was a doctor telling me the procedure went well they didn't see anything to be concerned about. What? Apparently after a blood test some numbers had dropped, and she had passed a little blood so they did an upper GI. What next! Mom tolerated the procedure well.

So yesterday I got a call she was medically discharged and should go to rehab or released to home with home health care. I really feel rehab was the best choice. I was relieved because I am a little freaked on that elbow wound, so hopefully by the time she gets out of rehab it will be well on its way to being healed up. And she is very weak. So she is back at Park Pointe, 14 day isolation, and we can visit through the window again. Sad, but it is what she needs.  I popped up on my lunch break yesterday to see her before she got transported and she was a trifle hangry again. I called downstairs to see if she could have lunch, but they had orders she was on a liquid diet only. Mom did not wish to partake in any liquids at that time . . . oh dear. I certainly hope she got something to eat last night . . . a hungry Morris Mallaney is not a pretty thing.  I got some clothes together for her and Joe dropped them off last night but couldn't find her window to visit. I'll head over tonight after work.

So Jo Ann is out of the hospital and one step closer to home.

Mom Update

Mom is still in the hospital. They opened up her elbow again today to drain some infection. They might have been going a bit deeper today, because she wasn't able to have anything to eat or drink before this procedure so maybe it was going to be more than a local. I gotta say she was a little hangry at noon today when I saw her.  She was also sitting up in a recliner. Poor Jo Ann. Hopefully the antibiotics will be able to get working with that gross stuff out of there. She is back on the regular floor. Her blood pressure is still acting up so they are working on that. No word yet on when she might be released. Her appetite is good and her color is better. She is ready to come home! Joe ran up after supper and said the procedure went well, Mom was waiting on her supper. They better feed her . . . lol.

Hopefully my next update will be her discharge date!

August

Mom is back in the hospital. She was not too peppy and when I got home from work Wednesday. She was very uncomfortable, her bad elbow was all swollen and sore. She couldn't move without pain. It had been coming on for a while but really got bad on Wednesday. We didn't want to hurt her trying to get her in car so we called ambulance and she had a comfortable ride to the ER. They admitted her, thank God. She is getting IV antibiotics for her elbow and the everlasting UTI. Tomorrow they are going to lance the small wound in her elbow and squeeze some junk out of there (ewwww), which I think will be good.  Just in the hospital room, not like a big surgery. She was on the regular floor, then last night I got a call about 10:30 and they moved her to Medium ICU, her blood pressure was super low. Not sure what was up with that. She is still in MICU today, they are going to adjust some of her meds. Blood pressure was pretty good all day, then took a dive again when she fell asleep. Poor Jo Ann. She is tough, sometimes too tough I think. I just left there, she was looking forward to meatloaf and mashed taters. Nothing wrong with her appetite, she is enjoying all her meals, she says everything is delicious, so that is a good sign. Her appetite had been declining at home. Unusual for Mom.  She still ate mind you, just not as much as usual. Not sure when she will be discharged, but I'm relieved she is there. She needs to be there right now.

Was sorry the reunion was canceled. Next year!

Tired of the heat wave too.

Was super busy at work with the beginning of school, but that is settling down now too.

Enjoying tomatoes and zucchini and peppers and flowers from the garden. So are the squirrels and the goldfinch and the hummingbirds, but I am happy to share. The sunflowers picked bare of all their petals amuse me, but not as much as the petals raining down on Finnegan, and he is baffled where they are coming from lol. The goldfinch are incredibly efficient at getting to the seeds.

I can't believe September is upon us. Time is flying by.

I'm sorry Mom is in hospital, but honestly a break is good. It tires one out, worrying and caring for someone like that. At night you are always listening with half an ear.  We are getting caught up on our sleep. It will do Joe good to have some days off. Plus we can crank the air during this awful heat wave . . . lol. I told mom that and she laughed and said they are cranking the air in the hospital, she is cold. I told her not to expect warmed blankets at home! LOL  But in reality she can have whatever she wants.

Best to all,

Kay

Home

Evacuation lifted at 4:00 p.m. today. Whew. It was nice to come home after work and not have to drive 45 minutes to John's house. John was an excellent host! Mom and Joe will be spoiled, but I'll have them back to normal in no time. John is on his way home with Mom, Joe and (hopefully) Finnegan, who had taken a liking to hiding under John's basement stairwell.  They tried a new chicken place over in Streator for supper tonight, Harold's (boo hoo I missed that). I think Mom will be happy to have her cable TV again, same with Joe. I also think John will be very happy to have his quiet, tidy house back! I think his cats will be relieved too, though there wasn't a whole lot of drama.

I'm on my bed, laptop on belly, enjoying the smell of fresh cut grass. Too bad it is not our grass!

Best to all!

Evacuated

Well, the Morris Mallaneys are Streator Mallaneys for a while. We have been evacuated due to the industrial fire down the street from our house. Thankful for John to welcome  us in. Not sure how long we will be displaced. Apparently 180,000 - 200,000 pounds of lithium batteries which were stored in the old Morris Paper Mill property are on fire. It needs to be extinguished with foam. Evac started at 900 block, then 800 block, I came home from work then to get things lined up figuring 700 block would be soon. Now the whole East Side of town is being evacuated.

Poor kitty Finnegan had a rough ride over, hurled and pooped in his carrier . . . ewwww, but he will settle in. John's kitties are upstairs, I'm down in the basement with Finn. The kitties have sniffed each other, but that is it. Then there was a growl and  a hiss big fat tails on the  John's girls due to the strange kitty in their territory ol.  Mom did well, though this will tire her out for sure. John doesn't have cable, so they will have an interesting day tomorrow.  Joe can find interesting things for them to watch on You Tube or something.  I have no one to cover for me at work due to vacations, so I'll be a commuter! LOL

I was mightily amused when we were heading out. Mom said she needed help getting her pants up? I was ever so surprised to see a big pair of my bloomers falling off her, taking her leggings down too. ! I said Mom, didn't those seem a little big when you were putting them on? LOL I mean I weigh twice as much as Mom! If that is TMI, I don't care, it was hilarious.

I'm in the basement chilling with Finn, eating pizza and having a beer. Glad to be safe and welcomed at John's lovely home! But I do not want to be here too long . . . lol There is no place like home.

One more thing . . . I have read of people having go bags, go figure I never thought I would need one. Well, life is strange. Even if I don't have a go bag, I think I need a go list. I got mom's meds and her personal items and clothes, and cash, etc. and Finn's food and bed. But I forgot work clothes! LOL  Luckily I do laundry right here at Johns, whew. They recommended turning off AC with the toxic smoke, so I worked up a sweat bustling around getting things packed up otherwise I'd have no problem re-wearing them.

Best to all.

Father's Day

Thinking about Bernie today. He would never move the cats so he could read the paper. He'd just wait for them to decide to move. He would say he didn't want the cats to get mad at him. LOL Cracked me up. Quite a change from Bernie's farmer attitude about cats back in the day!

John put some flowers at the Seneca Cemetery. Bernie would like that. John likes to park at the top and walk down. No ditch jumping like Bernie.  John came home for my 59th birthday (ugh) and a visit with Mom, and brought a delicious carrot cake. We went out and about and ate inside at Portillos, yum.  Thank you John. He will be celebrating his 55th next month. Old. Old. How come my hair is going white and John's is going black!? Weirdness.

Mom is hanging in there. No great improvements. It is much like before except she doesn't have that mass in her colon now. The visiting nurse thinks she has a UTI (AGAIN!), and we are waiting to hear, hopefully tomorrow. I'll be sad when the nurse stops coming. She sure gets things done and it is hard to get mom out, so Carol taking blood, specimens at the house is a true blessing.  Same old same old. I'm hoping she'll get some meds for UTI, and then get put on a low dose regimen to help prevent them. I'm hoping for some improvement in her energy and strength then. Fingers crossed. She still has a good appetite. Like mother like daughter lol.

Finnegan was under the weather, so had him out to the vet. Something else to worry about. Couple of hundred bucks later and an antibiotic shot, and he seems to be feeling better. Whew. My vet's mother and mom shared a room at rehab during her last stint. He has since lost his mother, a sweet lady.

I'm glad Covid restrictions have loosened up. I've been getting out more. Last week I went with a friend to the Whistle Stop in Diamond and had a delicious garlicky hoagie and 3 beers. OMG. I slept like a baby and was a zombie at work the next day. I was home by like 8:30 too.  It was a bad day. Everything I touched broke or malfunctioned and my brain was unable to process anything complicated. Like words. Friday night I got together with some old high school/softball friends and an enormous yawn about split my jaw at 9:00 p.m. I was reminded that I used to leave the house voluntarily to play 9:00 and 9:30 softball games out of town that sometimes didn't start until 10:00 and sometimes the temperature was 100 degrees. And oh yes, I used to drink copious amounts of beer before and after said games. Ugh. Oh the memories. It was too hot to sit outside and drink a beer the other night.  I now have a 9:00 self imposed curfew, at least on work nights. And some nights I am fighting to stay awake until it gets dark. That is Kay at 59. Oh boy.

Have a good week all. Can't help but think on this Father's Day how lucky the family was with such wonderful fathers and uncles. Good people good memories.

Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day!

I did Mom's side of the fam yesterday, John will hit Seneca next time he comes home. That hill scares me. What a way to go!

Mom is settling in. Hopefully her at-home therapy will help. She is still very weak and tired. I don't know what I expected at rehab, but an 84 year old woman who had a cancerous mass removed and had staples in her for over half the time at rehab . . . and who had been  bed bound for months before that, well clearly my expectations were ridiculous. Hopefully her at home therapy will help. Her blood pressure is low, the nurse is trying to line up some blood work and then we will evaluate with her GP. Her appetite is good. I'm glad we got the hospital bed. It makes things easier on everybody. Except Mom and Joe can't really work it. I find mother in interesting positions sometimes. I'm sure they'll get the hang of it eventually. LOL I don't get what is so hard about the up and down arrows, but like John says, everybody needs some way to pass the time. Just like the TV remote, mom likes to work it upside down. Oh well.

The bath aide came today, a lovely, sweet girl. But Kathleen can only take so much of that. She called and said she was at the front door but nobody was answering. We really should get a doorbell. Anyway she says "I'm running a little early, I'm here but no one is answering." I said well, we were expecting you at 2:00, but come on in! LOL I mean it was 12:30!  She told me she meant to schedule us at 1:00, but she is running ahead. OK. Fine. She comes in mom's room, mom is dozing, and she asks how she is doing, is she tired today? I told the aide Mom ate a good dinner (I made pot roast, we always eat early on Sundays), and the aide says "Oh good! She had a good meal when I was here Friday too, I found a tomato in her bed." OMG What must she think!? LOL I got the giggles over that one.  Then I left to go drink a couple beers at my friends' house. I don't know what happens here when I'm at work, but whatever! Mom and Joe get along just fine.  LOL She has OT, PT and bath aide this week. That is the busiest schedule any Morris Mallaney has had for a long time.

I went and sat and drank a few beers with my friend yesterday afternoon on her front porch, had a few beers with another couple this afternoon, good friends, and having lunch with another friend tomorrow at the park. Praise be, covid social isolation sucks! I'm glad things are starting to get back to normal. On the plus side I only need 2 beers and I'm done! Yikes. I remember Mom and Dad sitting on the front porch at the farm, and thinking how boring it was. I'd love to sit on a front porch with them now!

I got new license plates, and went out to try to change them. OMG I couldn't budge the screws. I mentioned it to the maintenance guy at work, and he sprayed some razzle dazzle stuff on there to loosen up the screws, and got one out, they were stripped and rusty and a mess, but then the other one broke off. He was kind enough to drill it out for me and find new screws and put on the new plate for me. Its too bad the new plate came with the sticker on or I would have stuck it on the old plate. It ended up being a pain in the ass. Not for me really, but for him. But anyways if you have an older vehicle (mine is a 2010, and I can't remember the last time I got new plates), do yourself a favor and give your bolts or screws or whatever they are a turn when you put on your new sticker. Save yourself (or a kindly friend) a headache down the road!

Have a good week all!

Home

Mom made it home today. She is exhausted. Hopefully after a good nights sleep in her own (new hospital) bed, she will feel better. A long day for her.

She kept telling me she needed more clothes at rehab, but I never got any laundry sent home, just one small load. Well, it seems that a stack of pillows got set on top of mom's primary bag of clothing I sent over  the first few days she was in rehab and there it sat. Luckily they cleaned out her closet today and sent them home. So I do not have much laundry to do at least. Mystery solved. I'm sure she wondered why I did not send her favorite clothes over, and here they were sitting in the closet over there! LOL Rehab is a different story when you can't go into the room and go through the closet and can only visit through 4 inches of an open window!

Home health care will be coming for a while, which is nice. Hopefully we can get mom settled in for another long spell at home. Fingers crossed! I told Mom you were all thinking of her, thank you.

May Days

Since Mom is in quarantine at Park Pointe it was nice to see her in person one night this week. Unfortunately it was at the ER, one of her staples came loose! LOL The home always calls if something is going on, and I didn't need to go, but I did not want to pass up an in-person visit. We enjoyed our visit. Staple is in a spot that sees a lot of action, right around the curve of her belly button.

I was under the weather a bit this week, ended up taking Friday off, and it helped. I'm feeling better, shook off my bug. I hadn't been over to the home because I was worn out after work, and Joe wasn't sure where to go, but yesterday we made it over there. Mom's bed is right by the window so we can chat there. I saw a smart lady with a chair down a ways. The window only opens a few inches so it is a little awkward if you don't have strong thighs. Having just fat thighs, they objected a bit. LOL  Now that Joe is comfortable knowing where to go he'll be over more often, I'm sure. He already ran over once today, Mom needed some chapstick. He leaves the stuff at the desk, and then goes behind the building to mom's window. You can park right near the room, which is nice. Mom was sitting up in the recliner today.  That is good therapy for her because I couldn't get her in a chair unless John was home for a visit. I think with the loose staple they will take it easier on therapy until those are out. She seems to be coming along slowly, but that is to be expected, she has been going downhill for months. She was complaining about bland food so I sent her beloved salt shaker and seasoned pepper over, I'm sure that will help.

I don't like the social isolation, but there is nothing to be done about that, darn Covid! Her voice is stronger on the phone, which is a good sign.

Have a good week all!

Just a Trifle Hangry

Mom got moved to a regular room yesterday. I went to see her last night and she was a trifle hangry. Just for future reference, don't ever offer a female Morris Mallaney canned chicken broth when she is hungry. Especially not on the heels of a colonoscopy cleanse. Ironically Bernie used to drink canned broth (or "bloth" as he called), and munch down a handful of saltines and he really seemed to enjoy it.

Mom was so pissy she gave me a terrible case of the giggles. Please understand that a pissy Jo Ann is nothing like a pissy Kathleen, so she is still somewhat civil. I asked Mom if she was being mean to the nurses, and she said no . . . but she was being brusque. OMG I busted out laughing again just thinking of that. We had a good visit, she could even hear me. I don't know if I've mentioned it, but recently Jo Ann's hearing has taken a nosedive. It sucks. But she could hear me last night. I suggested that if the nurses were walking away without answering her questions they probably could not hear her, as she has taken to speaking in a very low voice. I got a look on that one.

I asked her what her various buttons were for, she claimed the nurses hadn't told her anything. I showed her her pain button. She has had very little pain, but I hit it a few times while I was there. Drugs are good. Kay likes drugs. And I got her news on the TV before I left, she had been just sitting there in her bad temper. I sat up her bed a bit so she could see out the window. And when I left I stopped at the desk and had them take her a 7-Up.

The social worker and the doctor covering for Mom's GP phoned me yesterday afternoon and I told them both that mom needs rehab. She is awfully weak and has lost weight. I broached the subject with her last night, and I think she knows she needs it too.

Now Joe just got back from visiting and Mom was eating pudding and soup. Hallelujah! I will go see her tonight.

Things seem to be moving along very well.

Thanks for thoughts and prayers. I told Mom you were all concerned and thinking of her.

Surgery Day

The surgeon said the operation went well. Now we have to hope for a good recovery. Always some danger when you cut someone's bowel apart and sew it back together!  I'm glad laparoscopic surgery worked out for someone in this family. He wanted mom in ICU for one night, hopefully just the one night. She can get her tube thing out tomorrow he said and they will get her up. Good luck with that! Prep night was long, I don't think Mom got any sleep. Glad it is over. I hope she gets some rest.

I saw two relatives at the hospital, privacy concerns prevent me from naming one but it looked to be a routine test. Second one works there so it was nice to see Barb Ragan.

The surgeon said it would be a couple of hours at least, so I went to cafeteria and had breakfast and sat there for a while, fake sipping my empty coffee cup so I could have a break from my mask. Then I walked out to the car and grabbed my sweatshirt, and decided to go back to the waiting area, and it wasn't one minute before the surgeon came out. Good timing, and speedy too.

Glad it is done!

Mom Update

Please send good thoughts and prayers to Mom tomorrow. Surgery is at 7:30. We have to be at the hospital at 6:00 a.m.

Prep starts this afternoon at 4:00. Serenity now! I wish I could do it for her. It is going to be a long night.

Cleared for Surgery

Mom is cleared for surgery. April 22nd. Good to have a date set. Hoping after the surgery when she isn't bleeding anymore she can get some strength back. Now on to the pre-op tests. The hospital called here Friday, Joe answers, and gives the phone to mom, who fake hears.  Sadly Joe has no idea what they wanted either. What the hell? Mom tells me the hospital is picking her up on Monday. Sigh. I called them back and it is too early for any tests yet, so I have no idea what the call was about. I figure if they pick mom up Monday, they'll bring her back PDQ. LOL

Joe turned 60 this week. How did we get so old? John came home for a meal yesterday and we had a good visit.  There was cake and ice cream. Mom was pleased with both the visit and the cake and sat up for quite a while! She has mostly been staying in bed, so I like to see her sitting up. Consequently she slept very well last night too.  John will be home for Easter too. I think we will have him grill some burgers for us, maybe a steak.  Yum.

Finn got his teeth cleaned. $412.87. Sigh. I know. If you have never loved a cat you will never understand. The vet got a couple of fat cat jokes in too. I told him Finn is just big boned . . .

I went to a socially distanced St. Patrick's Day Party. It was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It had been ages since I had been to any sort of party. I left a bit early for the party because it was such a lovely Saturday and figured I'd go through Coal City and go by the relatives' houses. I am Bernie's daughter after all, and Bernie sure loved a ride. I was successful, ran into cousin Debbie walking her dogs and had a nice visit, then caught cousin Pat walking into his house, he and Mary were heading out to church. 2 for 2. I had 5 beers and plenty of corned beef, creamed cabbage and colcannon. Good eats.

Have a good week all. In memory of St. Patrick's Day 2008, and for your reading pleasure, and with permission of the author, my friend Kathleen Lestina, here is The Feast of Saint Patrick, a very true story. I can't believe it was 13 years ago!

Kay ☘

The Feast of Saint Patrick
By Kathleen Lestina
The Feast
Each St. Patrick’s Day or thereabouts we gather to celebrate our Irish heritage.  Well, some of us are celebrating our Irish heritage, the rest are just celebrating…
We have done it for so many years now that we’ve come up with the perfect Irish feast; corned beef, Irish stew, colcannon, creamed cabbage and…
The Flag
The flag is a shot made of Bailey’s Irish Crème, Orange Liquor, and Green Crème de Menthe.  There is an art to making the shot; one must have a steady eye and an even steadier hand.  The spirits are poured in order of the colors of the Irish Flag; the Crème de Menthe goes in first, then the Bailey’s and finally the Orange Liquor.  We drink beer when we are not drinking the shots—and we only have a shot when the circumstances warrant it; circumstances such as, that we have opened the oven in order to admire the sliced corned beef warming in the foil pan awaiting its fate.
The Clan
We, like the feast, are the same every year…the hosts are Mark and Donna, the Riley’s.  Marilyn (Mare), is Mark’s twin sister and her husband George—is my husband Joe’s brother—and there is Dave, one of Donna’s triplet brothers (his guest may change from year to year, this year it was Karine from Germany, who we all thought was a welcome addition to our Irish festival) myself, I’m Kathleen and the other Kathleen, or Kay as we affectionately call her.  Sophie, Mark and Donnas’ dog, also attends dressed in her St. Patrick’s Day scarf—and there may or may not be cameo appearances by the cats.  Mark and Donnas’ boys, Jackson and Lucas are there and if we start to get a little tipsy and say the occasional silly thing they are at the ready with their wry looks and their sideways glances that make us feel an inch tall and as though we should straighten up and act like proper adults…
Each guest arrives with their special dish in tow.  Mark makes the stew, Kay supplies the creamed cabbage, Mare brings the corned beef already cooked and the potatoes and cabbage ready to be cooked for the colcannon.  Dave and Joe and I bring the ingredients for the flag.  When a new guest and dish arrives there is certain amount of opening and smelling and oohing and aahing –and occasionally, the arrival of a new guest is also deemed a circumstance which warrants a shot of the flag.  In addition to the ogling over new food arrivals, each new guest that enters must don one of
The Hats
There are always hats.  Mark and Donna supply them.  They have changed over the years, unlike most aspects of our fete.  We’ve had all kinds from green plastic bowlers to headbands with sparkling clovers on springs (My Favorite Martian style).  This year the hats were particularly festive, and particularly tall.  They were felt beer mugs, a foot tall or better, complete with sudsy tops and green floppy brims.  As each of us was fitted with our faux fresh from the keg adornment, the wee lads would giggle at first and roll their eyes at last at the sight of us.
This year I brought pub chips and malt vinegar for an appetizer and we crunched and munched for a bit before we descended the basement stairs in preparation for the inevitable …
…battle…
…or ping-pong game if you prefer.
I must back up a bit.  The Riley’s basement is the perfect spot for a social gathering on any occasion and often is just that for those of us in our clan.  There’s a game for everyone from foosball, pop a shot, air hockey, to most recently a Wii.  The biggest attraction and source of competition between us, however, is the ping pong table.  Kay is the champion.  Notice I did not say she fancies herself the champion; no, she is the champion and no two ways about it.  Consequently, no one wants to play against her, yet everyone does and is always beaten badly.  It’s hard to hold her ping pong prowess against Kay, what with her red hair, infectious laugh and ready grin; her victims usually come away from the table sporting a grin of their own.  Kay’s mastery of the game is renowned and unquestioned, but the real rivalry begins when the brothers, George and Joe approach the battlefield, or ping pong court if you prefer.
The rivalry between the brothers has always been legendary but middle age and several pounds have made ping pong the best expression of it to date.  This year was no exception, and so as I said, we descended the basement stairs.  The Irish music was playing loudly, some of us or perhaps just I made a fool of myself by attempting a jig.  We all took turns losing at ping pong to Kay and playing the other games in the meantime.  The spirits of the flag had made their way down the basement stairs as well and some in the group had seen fit to partake of a shot due to the circumstance of their loss to Kay or due to the circumstance of a sunken pop a shot or due to the circumstance of Jackson or Lucas creating our Wii character with a thicker waist and larger mouth than we thought appropriate.  We were having a marvelous time.
Kay had come away from the table once again victorious and the brothers took their places.  The music was turned up in anticipation of the yelling and swearing that would ensue as their game got underway.  We are used to their rivalry, and after all these years are not even particularly interested in it.  They play and shout and sweat and swig while we all play and sing and revel in each other’s company.  We’re conscious that the game is going on, we may stop to watch a few shots and smile, but the only two people completely enthralled are George and Joe.
They stare one another down from opposite sides of the court.  Every name called, every tattle ever told, every sibling spat from earliest memory on finds its revenge in this battle.  Joe, at times is known to duck when George gets a certain glint in his eye, and this is only because he says George once threw a ping pong paddle across their family room at him in a fit of defeated rage…although George denies it  vehemently—he insists he had won and thrown it in triumph.  In any case this year’s battle raged on as it always does.
None of us can remember what actually happened, although Karine from Germany maintains she heard a piercing haggish moan just before the crash, so that can only mean a Banshee had called from outside…whatever it was…a Banshee, a Pooka, a Demon or a Leprechaun, something caused George to slip and crash his right arm through the thick glass of the basement window.  We all stopped what we were doing and turned aghast to find George pulling a blood soaked arm from the shattered glassy shards.  We froze.  All but Kay, that is, who had the sense to rush over and wrap his arm in a blanket.  She shouted orders and we ran up the steps.  911 was called and we circled around our wounded kinsman with concern.  Marilyn sobbed as we waited for help to arrive.  The paramedics rushed in and it seemed to take them a moment to determine which of us was the victim…but they eventually decided upon George and went about preparing him for his ride to the hospital in the ambulance.  They questioned us, of course to determine what had happened, and we told them, each adding our take on the events that had just occurred from our specific vantage point.  The largest paramedic scanned the bloody scene and all of us and said, “So this happened from ping pong?”
“Aye, ‘twas ping pong,” we said in unison, and together removed our 18 inch felt beer steins from our heads…
Not much more was said after that, for what could be said, it was what it was.  George was bandaged and taken to the waiting rescue vehicle and Marilyn and Kay were off to the hospital with him, with only one look of longing from each of them for the three bottles on the counter which contained the spirits of the flag…I can’t be sure what they were thinking, but I can only imagine that they were certain that if ever a circumstance warranted a shot of the flag, this undoubtedly was one…
The Aftermath
There was a flourish of bleach and mops and brooms and dustpans.  The battlefield was cleared and cleaned, the kitchen floor was scrubbed until all that was left that was the knowledge that the rest of us were left to carry on; to cook the potatoes and cabbage, assemble the colcannon and have our dinner.  We rose to the challenge.  We knew as well as we’d ever known anything that these indeed were circumstances which called upon the spirits of the flag.  Mark and I, the philosophers of the group, were determined the most suited for preparing the colcannon.  We reveled in our appointment and gathered at the stove top with pints (for drinking) and spoons (for stirring) and our wits (for philosophizing).  The front of a stove and the expectation of a delicious outcome are the perfect precursors of profound thought—and profoundly think, we did.  We recounted the tale of George’s recent fate, once or twice, and toasted the flag thrice, for bloodshed in honor of George, for tears in honor of Mare and for loyalty in honor of Kay.  We didn’t shirk our responsibilities, though, no, we stirred and watched the pots of potatoes and cabbage as carefully as any Celtic mother in time honored tradition.  Jackson, or maybe it was Lucas came in and pointed out as only a child can that the burners were not lit—and alas, he was right, clever lad.  Without a moment’s hesitation we ignited the burners and began once again to drink thoughtfully, to think, profoundly and to cook—this time with better results.
We ate our feast and grew weary.  We drank another toast to our battle scarred brother, our worry worn sister and our loyal trusted friend.  We vowed to gather next year with them (and to make sure Mare pre-cooks the colcannon and George wears shoes with better traction) and enjoy the Feast of Saint Patrick.

Update

How can February be over already? Crazy.

Mom had an appointment with her cardiologist today about getting cleared for surgery. He wants her to have a stress test and a pacemaker check before he will clear her for surgery. Then it is on to the GP to be cleared and then, assuming she can get cleared, back to surgeon to schedule. I wish I had more patience. I'm sure everybody else wishes the same.

Thank God for the hospital transport van! Mom's anemia has her pretty weak, so getting her in and out of car was getting kind of scary. Wonderful people pick her up in that van and take great care of her and she doesn't have to get out of the wheelchair! Bless those good people and the hospital for offering that wonderful service.

The outing today tuckered Jo Ann out! She is whooped.

Covid shot #2 today. Saw cousin Debbie at the clinic giving vaccines, but due to not wearing my glasses because they fog up because of my mask, I didn't see her in time to let her jab me. LOL Some other time maybe!

John came for a visit last weekend. Mom liked that.

Glad the weather has turned for the better. Will all this snow ever go away?

That's all for now.

Snow Day

Where did January go?

Finn thought he wanted to go outside this a.m. but I opened the window and gave him a preview and he changed his mind . . .

I know I have been MIA for a while, but it really was same old same old.

At my post cataract glasses appointment the eye doctor saw something wonky with my optic nerve and referred me to an opthalmologic neurologist at Wheaton Eye Clinic. I had that appointment last week and he didn't see anything to worry about . . . but wants to recheck me in 9 months. LOL Ok. Will do. I was there for 4 1/2 hours and I must stress this point. If the eye doc says you don't have to have a driver, and you have to drive home at night with your eyes dilated, take a driver! Or an uber! Arghh. I'm used to driving home in daylight a very short distance home with my eyes dilated. Driving home at night from a more populous area (Plainfield) with lots of streetlights and lots of cars sucked. Part of it is my problem for not wanting to put people out, I had many offers of transport from my kind friends, but I insisted I would be fine.  So my eye doctor has referred to to a retina specialist and now a neurologist so she definitely does not like my left eye. Both have turned out fine so far. I should just be happy about that, but oh my gosh the money, it has not been cheap, even with good insurance.

I got a summons for jury duty but did not have to report. My former boss once made a comment that I would be the juror from hell . . . I still puzzle over that comment sometimes lol.

On the Mom front, I was growing increasingly bitchy and frustrated that she would not go to the doctor. She kept telling me she had an appointment coming up, that she would talk to the doctor then. That appointment was for a pacemaker check with her cardiologist, scheduled every 6 months. Of course she rescheduled it once, and then the doctor rescheduled it. I kept telling her he would refer her to her GP, but oh my gosh is she stubborn! Finally I had just had it. I told Joe I am done. It is up to you now. If it was up to me I'd phone her doctor and see if you can get someone sent to house to draw blood and do a urinalysis (I was sure she had a UTI). I told Joe if I were him I would not wait too long, start working on her now, she is going downhill fast and there is no way she should be this pale and weak and failing. Something is wrong. Joe had been siding with Mom, saying stuff like "Old people are supposed to have diarrhea" and "She has good days" and "She'll come around" . . . sigh.

So  later that day, guess what? Joe calls and Mom has a doctor's appointment that very same afternoon. I asked him how in the hell did that happen. Joe guesses that he talked her into it. One day. One day. I had been on her for months. Whatever, I'm relieved and happy she is FINALLY going. That was on Thursday. Joe takes her to appointment and calls me later at work and tells me he took her to ER for bloodwork and evaluation. They'll call in a couple of hours. She ends up getting admitted due to low hemoglobin. Uh oh. They give her blood and get her hemoglobin stabilized. And she has a UTI. They call in a gastro consult due to low hemoglobin and on Friday she has a colonoscopy and a CT scan.

They found a malignant mass in her right colon. We had follow-up with gastro guy on Thursday and found out that it has not spread, and given its location on right side the removal can often be done laparoscopically; they remove the part of the colon with the mass and sew it back together, no bag, usually one night in hospital. Next step is appointment with surgeon. I called and surgeon had a cancellation so we go tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. Then she will be need to be cleared for surgery. I hope after the surgery she can get in for some rehab because she has been not feeling well for a while and  has been very inactive is very weak. Hopefully that will change once she starts feeling better.

She also has a hiatal hernia, and got an Rx to help with that. TUMS stock may tumble . . .

She got home Saturday night about 5:00, exhausted.

So doctor's appointments and surgery for Jo Ann and hopefully she will feel better. I was afraid she would say she would not do anything, but good for the PA at the gastro office, she was pretty graphic about what happens when people choose to not have surgery. So far no argument from Mom.

We ran into Keat Cushing and his wife, Mary at the gastro office. Kind of awkward to talk about people's issues there, but always nice to see them, and they looked great!

We got a good bit of snow, thankful Joe is strong, not just for the snow but with Mom. That snow gave me noodle arms.

I got covid vaccine #1 this week.

We will now enjoy chicken and dumplings on this snowy day. Mom loves Lawry's seasoned salt and seasoned pepper and butter on many things, including dumplings. The Pioneer Woman's dumplings have a touch of cornmeal in them. Yummers. No more Bisquick at the Morris Mallaneys.

Peace all and stay healthy!
